Midweek: mini quilt swap -- wow! from With Strings Attached

Yesterday I received the mini-quilt from my MQG swap partner, Sara Hooten.     I am utterly gobsmacked.  Isn't it gorgeous?

A big picture of a small quilt

Detail of applique and quilting

Sara used this photo.  I took it at the entrance to the Zion-Benton Public Library in August, 2021.

Zion is Monarch and Zinnia City. This year Benton Township (Beach Park and Winthrop Harbor) will join as the Bee Cities.  (Our high school mascot is the Zee-Bee.)

Weekly update: cold weather, a birthday, in the mail almost, WIP + reading from With Strings Attached

It's been cold everywhere in the U.S. this week.  I took a very brief walk from the parking lot to the lakefront to take a few photos.  (I was on my way home from the grocery store and not bundled up (face mask) to walk any farther.)

When the cold settles in I am grateful for central heat and a garage for the car.

I had an ophthamologist appointment on Monday. Hooray! Cataract surgery is scheduled for February.

Stevens turned 84 on Thursday.  He was pleasantly surprised when I told him that my FB post about his birthday ...

Midweek: too busy? another finish and OMG start from With Strings Attached

The 25 B blocks for Indigo Way are finished.

I put the A's and B's on the design wall.  I really like busy designs but my initial impression is that this is TOO busy.

The pattern calls for 20 half blocks for the setting triangles.  I've made four.

I've told myself firmly not to rush this -- let the blocks sit for a while.  An entire quilt of just A's and/or just B's would look pretty good.

Meanwhile,  here is the **fourth** finish for 2024.   I made the flimsy in December with leftovers from ...

Friday check in: blue and white finished plus OMG for January from With Strings Attached

I surprised myself!  The blue and white blanket weave quilt is quilted and bound.  On Wednesday I wrote that I had to trim quite a bit to even up the sides.  I had to do more trimming when the quilting was finished.

The large floral print on the back was a gift from our dear Magpie Celia's stash.  (Her daughter sent each of us a box.)

5-3/8 yards for this project.

The MQG mini quilt was my January OMG.  I wrote about it earlier.  My swap partner wrote to say she received it and she likes it.   She ...

Friday check in: birthday week, mini in the mail, and a finish! from With Strings Attached

Look who began a "prime" year on Wednesday.   The Facebook post with this photo garnered 139 "likes" and 94 comments to his surprise and gratification.   (I gave him three new pairs of his preferred suspenders and a large-screen clock/calendar, not-so-tactfully described as a "dementia clock" on the Amazon listing.)

Earlier this month I made this spiral quilt and wrote that I'd like to try the concept with other blocks.  Now I have! It's my entry for the 2023 MQG Mini Swap. I mailed it to my swap partner earlier this week.

Though the swap instructions said 24 ...

Weekly update: RSC blue, the mini swap, and a gift from With Strings Attached

More mild weather this week meant time for several walks--Camp Logan (Illinois Beach State Park) and three forest preserves:Sedge Meadow River Trail, Raven Glen West, and Rollins Savanna.

Top right:  milkweed pod. Center: "winter berries" is my generic name; moss is about the only green this time of year. Bottom: ground cherries; Indian hemp, aka dogbane, pods.  Here's more about dogbane.

When I finished My Blue Heaven last month there were triangles and squares left over.  There were enough triangles for 210 HSTs as well as a lot of squares.  I was able to make 26 star blocks ...

Weekly update: the swap hits the spot, Rhododendron Trail, and reading from With Strings Attached

On Friday afternoon it was cloudy along the lakefront here but sunny in downtown Chicago, 40 miles away.   You can see the skyline along the horizon.

I sneaked in some sewing on Saturday as I participated in two AAUW meetings by Zoom.  Our branch met Saturday morning to hear Dr. Ada Cheng, sociology prof-turned-storyteller talk about her immigrant experience.  In the afternoon the AAUW-Illinois state board held its winter meeting.  So convenient to attend from the warmth of my studio rather than driving 200 miles to Bloomington.

We did go out Saturday night to Waukegan High School. The Lake County ...

Weekly update: hurrah! and on to new creations + reading from With Strings Attached

Kathy and I took a shift at Feed My Starving Children on Tuesday as the Zion Woman's Club's "day of service."  FMSC packages a fortified rice mix that is shipped worldwide.  Though it would be easy to automate the entire process their model is to get people involved and motivated to donate by inviting them to pack the product.

WHEW.  I finished the two big projects that have preoccupied me all month.

One is the annual reporting for the GFWC (General Federation of Women's Clubs). That documentation not only qualifies our club for awards but also helps ...

Friday check in: MQG swap reveal! from With Strings Attached

It's time to reveal the results of the Mini Swap hosted by the Modern Quilt Guild -- at least, of my part in it.  Kathy C. was my swap partner.  Here's the 24" mini quilt that she sent me.   Gray and coral are two of my current favorite colors and I love batiks.

I used batiks for "Toward the Morning," the mini I sent to Kathy.

This was the first time I've made a flange binding.

The triangles-in-formation design is from a stenciled frieze at Crab Tree Farm which I toured in July, 2019 .

The colorway was inspired ...

Weekly update: some pink, OMG, and a squirrel from With Strings Attached

Lynn and I have known one another since kindergarten. We reconnected last year on our high school class's 50th reunion FB group.  She joined me on Tuesday for a hike at Illinois Beach State Park. It was a pleasant 3-mile catching-up.

Wednesday my husband and I went out to discover a new-to-us segment of the lakefront bike trail.  It was so calm -- in great contrast to the upheaval in Washington, D.C. which we watched on the news, horrified.

(You can tell it's a different day by the color of my turtleneck. :) )

The sun was out on Saturday ...

Weekly update: project updates, OMG, and more from With Strings Attached

Our first forest preserve outings of the year -- Spring Bluff on Saturday and Van Patten Woods on Sunday.

Enough people had walked along the trails to pack down the snow so I didn't flounder.

Left collage: red-wing blackbird nest, a gravity defying limb, horsetails.

Right collage: gull tracks in the sand.

I've collected/accumulated household textiles for many years. In 2019 I sold nearly all of the aprons in a yard sale. In 2020 I cut up vintage tablecloths to make tote bags (see them here).   This year I'm assessing the dish towels.  I will keep those ...
